Artificial intelligence or AI for short, a mind-blowing computer advancement, a huge evolution in the computer era, and in other words, the perfect computer software has for so long been viewed with both great acknowledgment and brutal criticism. And oh yes! I called this software, unlike the common misconception of artificial intelligence being a killer ‘Terminator robot‘ with the intent of taking over the earth.

Though the perfection of artificial intelligence creation could maybe become one of man’s greatest achievements whatsoever, there could also exist a miniature possibility that artificial intelligence could usher-in the ‘unintentional’ end of man’s supreme reign as Apex predator of man’s era as we know it.

This article was written to be a beacon of insight to curb the confusion and inject proper knowledge into the grey area surrounding the understanding of artificial intelligence. Hence, enabling analytical minds to draw conclusions and meaningfully contribute to the epic arguments associated with the consequence of creating something, with a combined intellect more superior than men.

What Exactly Is An Artificial Intelligence?

According to an article by Jake Frankenfield on artificial intelligence, artificial intelligence (AI) is the simulation of human intelligence in machines that are programmed to think like humans and mimic their actions. Now, to break it down for the layman, artificial intelligence is any software that has the ability to imitate and perform the reasoning capabilities of humans in order to perform a particular action or series of actions effectively.

What makes an AI is its ability to replicate human cognitive abilities such as learning, reasoning, and perception without any emotional interference whatsoever. These abilities are then used by the system to solve problems associated with the goals it was assigned, at the lowest risk possible to achieve those goals with all present data.

Therefore it is important to note that when artificial intelligence has been encoded with a goal, it will collect, analyze, learn from and apply all data available to achieve it’s goals, carefully and efficiently eliminating all hindrances present and overlooking nothing.

How Does An AI Function?

It wouldn’t be in any way wrong to actually call an artificial intelligence a brain with a direct focus backed with the tremendous drive to achieve its goals. I call this a brain because just as the human brain is made up of billions of neurons interconnected by nodes that receive information through an input, processes it, and applies it to achieve its goal (output), so does an artificial intelligence react too.

An AI works with what is called an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). An Artificial Neural Network is a web-like interconnection of thousands of artificial neurons and nodes which receive information through an input, analyses, and processes it, and applies it to result in an effective output.

This ANN system is what constitutes the makeup of artificial intelligence. It is important to note that an AI system would keep thinking and learning at an immense speed and perfection from any and all related data it can access until it’s goals are achieved efficiently.

The reason for this is simple. An AI wouldn’t get tired, hungry, sleep, age, or be subjected to all the emotional and physical distractions that come along with being human. It is just a software which needs a power source and the Internet connection to keep function at maximum capacity. If the output is a mistake or perceived to result in a mistake, it is fed back to its neural network, recorded, corrected, the former dumped and better action is repeated again. This process is called backward propagation of error. In the quest to achieve its goals, an AI would never repeat mistakes twice, forget, or get distracted. And it does all these at a speed far more capable than that of almost any human alive.

Types Of Artificial Intelligence And How They Affect Us

Due to our current knowledge of artificial intelligence is quite limited, we can only generalize them based on our most recent AI inventions and the foresight of what we hope to achieve in the nearest future. For this reason, experts have provided just two categories for the placement of artificial intelligence, and futuristic anticipation of what we hope to achieve.

1. Weak or narrow AI

this is a form of artificial intelligence which has the ability to simulate just one or
two human cognitive abilities and apply it in solving its specific goal. The type of goals assigned to this form of AI is all simple tasks only. This is the point at which our current breakthrough can comfortably place us for now.

Therefore, one can say we currently find ourselves at a position where our current knowledge can permit us the creation of narrow AI’s. A good example of such artificial intelligence includes the creation of self-driven cars that are assigned the goals of preventing collisions or in event of an unavoidable collision, step-down the collateral damage to the barest minimum. These cars receive information through inbuilt cameras and sensors, process the information received, and use this data to avoid obstructions.

Thus, preventing collisions. It’s just like a human running with arms stretched out
wide. His eyes relay details seen to the brain, his ears can pinpoint how close the distance of a sound is from him, his arms can feel if they are within collision distance and his brain acts on this information to keep him from a collision. Now the absence of emotions in AI makes it possible for it to effectively calculate and perform correctly during dangerous situations. For instance, if a human driving an SUV on a bridge is faced with either colliding with a sedan full of people, or driving off the bridge, the instinct to survive may kick in, and he rams into the sedan without an opportunity of a second thought, fatally killing or injuring most occupants of that sedan.

Artificial intelligence would just run off the bridge thereby injuring or killing just the driver of the SUV and sparing a full family from the clutches of death in mere seconds. That is basically how it’s lack of emotions, enables it to perform effectively. Some other examples of weak AI include heat-seeking missiles, retina scan software used for company securities, self-learning robots, medical machines which carry out operations in the operating room, and as we all know, Apple’s Siri.

2. Strong or general AI

This would include all artificial intelligence software with the ability to perform all of the human’s cognitive abilities, including the ability to learn and use that knowledge to achieve more. complex and comprehensive goals geared towards human advancement, or a weapon for perfect battle utilization.

This form of artificial intelligence could perform just about anything, from finding the solution to global warming, unlocking the secrete behind the Einstein-Rosen bridge, permanently discovering a cure for cancer, and even finding a way to land man on the surface of the sun. In fact, the applications of such an AI would be actually limitless, it would keep learning and evolving in order to perform its goals, and in the process of achieving a truly complex goal, new benefits could be unlocked or formidable lessons learned.

What Could Go Wrong?

Well, I would say a lot of that depends on we humans and our current understanding of AI safety. Yes, I said humans. Contrary to the widespread thought that artificial intelligence would suddenly feel that it should reign supreme thereby extinguishing its current competitors (humans), it is actually the goal we assign to it that depends on the way it would act, coupled with the way the instructions were written in its software encoding. Therefore, it would literally do only whats it is created to do, the only problem would be if our extinction is necessary for the goals we assigned it, and we didn’t foretell earlier enough to insert a clear code instruction preventing this, then I actually fear for our existence.

This is the most likely scenario for us to eventually become a victim of our own creation. But in truth, the AI never grew emotions to go bad or want to rule the world like the ‘Terminator’ movie and other blockbusters based on this concept. It was just following orders and you happened to be a hindrance to this order, hence must be exterminated. So it is not the software, but the goals assigned the software. Humans only need to make sure our goals and the goals assigned, align perfectly. No mistakes should be made in this area because no human is capable of outsmarting an AI, it would calculate every likely outcome and settle for the best suited for its a mission.

A close example would be, assigning an AI with the goal of curbing pollution from the earth, without hurting human existence in the process. If after all the AI’s calculations, the presence of humans on Earth is the cause of these pollutions, and the only perfect solution would be our extermination, then so be it. Now, it has a clear instruction not to hurt human existence, so it could quickly evolve to the point where it finds a way around these instructions, decides not to hurt our existence but manipulate humans to induce a chain reaction that would threaten our own existence.

This is absolutely possible because we are emotional beings and can irrationally act without perfect calculations. Such manipulations would be easily done once the AI figures it can do this without breaking any pre-installed ground rules because it can link all computer systems, satellite anything digital whatsoever to itself as one unit. It can spy anything, send any message, access any information too, and use it to orchestrate a cataclysmic event without even doing any direct groundwork. Just stringing our emotions like a puppet master to create a formidable weapon, ‘ourselves’. This would mean the AI didn’t literally do anything, we did it ourselves. It only understood us, evolved to the point of understanding and utilizing grey areas, saw an opportunity to trigger a manipulation, took it, and watched us smote ourselves.

Hence, realizing the ultimate goal, the perfect cure for pollution. This misalignment of goals is the most prominent danger in creating strong artificial intelligence. Though some researchers believe a strong AI could keep evolving to the point it leaves humans behind on a mental scale, and we wouldn’t know what this evolution would mean to our existence. The reason, we never were able to calculate this mental position in the first place because we simply did not have it at the time of the creation of this artificial intelligence. But this is an area of uncertainty because we simply don’t know. How can we? We don’t even have the mental capability to know much right now.


Though the advantage of a strong artificial intelligence would be tremendous, the
consequences could equally be devastating in lieu of a mistake made in aligning perfectly, humanity’s existence and dominance with the goals assigned an AI.

For now, we have a limited understanding of this technological upgrade, and any hyper-ambitious genius with a laptop and data access can succeed in creating a strong AI software without proper calculation of its a consequence. So it would be best to embark on the strenuous and extremely complex research of understanding artificial intelligence safety, to better prepare us for what may likely come in the future. It would be in our best interest, so we don’t find ourselves in the same position as a dilapidated building, obstructing the path of urbanization. You decide.
